A cast-iron settee designed in 1956 by Edward Bawden (1903-1989), and produced by the Bilston Foundries, the back with geometric patterning reminiscent of fretwork and the Chinoiserie style, the apron with interlaced diamond motif, English (Staffordshire), ca. 1956. Slatted seat replaced with Brazilian Ipe wood.
Edward Bawden was a painter, illustrator, and graphic designer, who studied at the Cambridge School of Art beginning in 1919 and at the Design School of the Royal College of Art from 1922 to 1925. In 1956, he was commissioned to design this settee, as part of a suite of furniture for Bilston Foundries Limited in Staffordshire. It was first exhibited and sold at Harrods in London.
