Still Life with Pineapple
description
American School, possibly New York State
Still Life with Pineapple
Artist unidentified, third quarter of the 19th century
Oil on canvas
25 ¾” x 33 1/8”
The canvas has been lined and placed on a new stretcher, probably in the early 1970s. Ultra-violet light shows evidence of in-painting, mostly in upper-right quadrant.
Provenance: Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Tillou
Illustrated: Nineteenth-Century Folk Painting: Our Spirited National Heritage plt. #138
This still-life prominently shows a compote of peaches and grapes surrounded by a pineapple, watermelon, grapes and apples on the table top with a drapery swag. The artist has succeeded in the juxtaposition of the fruit, creating smaller still-life vignettes within the painting.
