Carved Eagle with American Flag
description
Unidentified maker
Probably Pennsylvania, ca. 1850-1875
Carved wood, polychrome paint.
Over-all in fine condition, retaining original surface. Loss to one arrow, repair to olive branch.
The 23-star American Flag was in use from July 4th 1820 to July 3, 1822 under the presidency of James Monroe.
This Carved Eagle with American Flag portrays similarities to the work of George Stapf (1862-1958), who often carved eagles with a waving American Flag. The eagle is clutching a shield, with 13 stars and a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. Theses recognizable symbolic elements and the eagle, carved with outstretched wings is emblematic of the Coat of Arms of the Great Seal of the United States.
