Peacock Weathervane
description
J. Howard and Company (1856-1867)
West Bridgewater, Massachusetts
Cast zinc body, sheet copper tail and comb.
Over-all in fine condition, small comb is replaced (top of head), holes in feet filled from where rivets held iron support bar (now missing). The thicker gauge, impressed copper tail has a darker oxidized surface with traces of a later gilt surface, possibly intentionally removed.
Provenance: Private collection, Chicago, Illinois.
For collectors of J. Howard and Company weathervanes, the peacock may be the most elusive form and is therefore highly coveted. Once again, J. Howard and Co. have mastered the sculptural beauty of--in this case--a peacock, with its appealing curvilinear lines. The peacock’s large, highly decorated tail helps stabilize and balance the full, cast zinc body (another testimony of the manufacturing ability of this company)
15 ½” h., 31” w., 3” d.
