Jumping Horse Weathervane
description
A.L. Jewel & Co., Waltham, Massachusetts (1852-1867)
Impressed: A.L. Jewell & Co. Waltham, Massachusetts
ca. 1860
Full body molded copper, sheet copper tail, zinc sphere.
Over-all in excellent condition, seams of sphere resoldered. There is evidence of a later gilt-painted surface, which most likely was professionally removed, now showing large portions of the original yellow sizing (used in preparation before applying a gilt surface).
Provenance: Private collection; Skinner Inc., Marlborough, Massachusetts (2013).
Capturing a wonderful sense of motion, this Jumping Horse over a Sphere Weathervane has survived in a remarkable state of preservation, retaining an exceptional dry oxidized surface, highlighted with shades of yellow from the original sizing further enhancing its aesthetic appeal. This example is among only a few known signed surviving examples.
17 ¼” h., 30” w.
