description
The bell-shape body on gadrooned foot, applied strapwork, cast harp-shaped handles, the stepped domed cover with gadrooned rim and cast bud finial rising from an applied foliate calyx, engraved on front with a coat of arms within a scrollwork cartouche.
The arms are those of Pole or Poole with a baronet's canton. They could be for Sir James Poole (c. 1640–c. 1710) of Poole who was created Baronet Poole in 1677.
They could also be for Sir John Pole (1649–1708), 3rd Baronet Pole of Shute House, who represented Lyme Regis, Bossiney, Devon, East Looe and Newport in the House of Commons. During the Civil War, the family were divided in their loyalties: Sir John's father Courtenay was a Cavalier, but Courtenay's father was a Parliamentarian. Courtenay was at Exeter when the town surrendered to the Parliamentary forces in April 1646, and paid the usual fine imposed on those who fought for the losing side.
