Egon Schiele's “Seated Lady” is a powerful pencil drawing that reflects his characteristic style of distorted and expressive depiction of the human form. The woman is depicted in an asymmetrical pose, with emphasized, sharp lines and strong contours. The drawing is brought to life through dynamic, bold lines and a focus on the essentials, enhancing the physicality and emotional depth of the figure. The woman is depicted with a hair ribbon and a ruffled dress and appears somewhat reserved and pensive, making the scene very powerful and expressive. The painting comes from the collection of Heinrich Böhler, who was an artist himself and took painting lessons from Egon Schiele. The teaching relationship very quickly turned into a friendship and Böhler became one of Egon Schiele's great collectors. His collection included some of Schiele's major works such as “Triestiner Fischerboot” 1914, “Häuser mit Wäsche” 1914 and many others that are now part of the Leopold Museum's collection. The Seated Lady was one of the few paintings from Böhler's sensational collection to come onto the market and was sold to a private collector in Germany. We are now delighted to be able to offer this exceptional work.
