Jonas W. Holman was an American Artist whose work is characterised by simple compositions, clear facial features, and vivid detail. Holman worked as a portrait painter, writer, doctor, and preacher, supporting himself through these vocations as he travelled among Baptist congregations. Holman used props that pointed to the sitters' erudition; he also concentrated on the details of his sitters' costumes, showing women with rings and earrings and men with stickpins fastened to cravats. His surviving portraits, some of which are housed in institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, continue to be studied for their artistic and historical significance.
