Rare and Refined Set of Six Vernacular Bar Back Chairs

Solid Yew Wood with Excellent Colour and Well Patinated Surface

36.25" high x 19.5" wide x 18.25" deep Seat Height 17.5"

description

A most unusual and genuine set of six vernacular ladderback dining chairs, fashioned from solid yew wood. The wide crested and generously tapered backs, each with four pierced ladder rails, above solid plank seats with shaped rails and square legs joined by all round stretchers. The chairs are mortice and tenon constructed, with visible pegs through the joints. Their condition fairly reflects the age, material and function of this set, there is some visible shrinkage between the boards of the seats, but being fashioned of yew wood they are robust, strong and fully functional, the tight grained yew wood has developed a wonderful rich nutty colour and well burnished surface. Scars and bruises throughout with incidental minor losses as one would expect, but this is a well-drawn and finely constructed set of provincial chairs of most unusual design and character.
