Height: 7.6 cm

description

A gilt rook chess piece made to commemorate the first match played by Transatlantic cable starting 31st May 1897.  Five members of the House of Commons in London took part against five members of the House of Representatives in Washington.  The moves were relayed using the telegraph cable and the match lasted two days, ending in a draw.  A section of the the actual cable is encased within the rook and is visible within.  Made by Carlo and Arthur Giuliano in London, 1897.

An identical example is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum; it is believe that each participant may have been given one in commemoration of this pioneering event.
