An exceptionally articulated necklace in the form of a snake designed to be worn at different lengths, the head surmounted with a cabochon sapphire and diamonds.  The smoothness of the gold finish with its engraved scales is extraordinarily tactile, while the sophisticated engineering of the sections allows it to be astonishingly flexible.  It is one of the most successful examples of its genre.  French, c.1875.
