George III Sheraton Period Satinwood Sheveret, Probably by Gillows

Overall 16 ins wide, 10 1/4 ins deep and 38 ins high; over feet 19 ins wide

description

A Gillows design, Sheraton period satinwood cheveret or Bonheur-du-jour with a provenance to David and Peggy Rockefeller. As designed in two separate pieces, the top with a laminated, shaped and molded carrying handle with two short and one long drawer all cross-banded and line inlaid; the lower section with one locking drawer (with key) all line inlaid and cross banded, the four legs with elegantly out-turned legs, a shaped shelf connecting the legs. The cheveret or Bonheur-du-jour was in the 1790’s an essential element of refined decoration – a small table for a lady’s writing equipment. This delightful piece is most certainly by Gillows.
