A GEORGE II BURR WALNUT AND PARCEL GILT BUREAU CABINET ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF GILES GRENDEY
description
Note: Retaining mainly the original gilding, the mirror plates are period replacements and the handles are faithful reproductions.
A virtually identical cabinet was formerly in the Hochschild Collection and is now in a private collection.
This cabinet features herringbone cross banding on the doors, the drawer fronts and the fall. The Hochschild cabinet was left plain in those areas.
The bombé shaped base of the cabinet reflects the taste of the original owner and the fashion of his or her country.
Giles Grendey had a flourishing business not only in London but also abroad. Furniture by Grendey has been traced back to Spain, Italy, Portugal and Norway. The Hochschild cabinet had a Swedish provenance and it is possible that this cabinet was also ordered by a Scandinavian or Germanic family, where such a bombé shape was fashionable at the time.
