Carolle Thibaut-Pomerantz
Percier & Fontaine
Allegories of the Arts
description
Rare décor designed by Percier et Fontaine, architects of Napoleon, and most probably the only wallpaper décor they created.
Wood-block printed , attributed to Jacquemart and Bénard, manufacture, Paris, 1798-1800.
In a neo-classical style, the six Allegory figures are individually enframed by pilasters and draperies, in an array of sepia and green tones- achieving an exquisite palette.
No other full version of these six Allegories is known to exist
Six Allegories depicted:
- Agriculture (gardening)
- Engraving
- Architecture
- Music
- Painting and Sculpture
The original drawing of two Allegories, Painting and Sculpture, is in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
An identical wallpaper version of two Allegories, Architecture and Music, is in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
