A surface of deep red hues and honeycomb hammering creates a beautiful background for this work of art. The cylindrical body is ornamented with an applied, wide, die-rolled band of repeating eight Asian figures and a rabbit. A horizontal, reeded band decorates the area above the splayed foot base (which is filled with its original lead to give it stability - and heft, weighing in at 33.6 pounds).

The plants are most interesting in their execution. Tall, 3-dimensional leaves of copper are chased into the body while three applied silverplate leaves stretch upward from the base. The naturalistic display of the leaves is captivating with their lovely, veined details and undulating surfaces, with some leaves twisting and others folding back amongst themselves. A copper stem emerges from the central leaf. A copper leaf curls over the stem and three applied silver offshoots emerge from the other side with stunning flowers and chased details.

This rare umbrella stand is an exceptional display of aesthetic movement design, and the combination of silver and copper is breathtaking.

Very few umbrella stands were ever made by Gorham. Umbrella stands are never illustrated in their commercial catalogs, only listed as an object made of copper. Gorham only made two models in copper - this, the Y16, and the Y27. Reed & Barton only mentions two in their 1885 catalog as well.

Stamped on the outer edge of the foot is Gorham's anchor copper mark and 'GORHAM & CO/ Y16' and the 'O' date letter for 1882. It measures 24 inches tall by 8.25 inches in diameter and is in very good/ excellent condition with some wear to the original red patination. It even has its original copper insert, also marked with the model number 'Y16.'
