Whiting Manufacturing Company Antique Sterling Silver and Mixed Metal Aesthetic Movement Bowl, New York, NY, c. 1880s

Unusual form bowl with nautical inspiration including a crap, lobster, kelp and seagrass.

12 inches long across the handles, 7 inches wide and just under 4 inches high

description

This rare bowl is a stunning example of nautical-inspired aesthetic movement design. The hammered body and acid-etched kelp create a lovely background for the repousséd, engraved, and applied decorations. 'S' initials are engraved on the tops of the curved handles which are flanked on the body with dramatic, swirling sea plants with hammered and stippled detailing. One side of the dish has an applied silver lobster, and the other a copper and silver crab. The domed base has an applied, wavy design that compliments the upper rim and is chased with flowing sea grass.

This stunning bowl is marked with Whiting's trademark and 'STERLING/ 1066/ A.' It measures 12 inches long across the handles, 7 inches wide and just under 4 inches high to the handle tops. It is in excellent condition with some wear to the original interior gilding.
