The arms are those of Smith for James Smith of Craigend (1707-1786) in Sterlingshire, Scotland. He was a West Indies merchant in Glasgow and had number of his sons who were extraordinarily successful entrepreneurs; John founded the famous booksellers John Smith & Sons in 1751 and rebuilt Craigend, James bought Craighead in Blantyre on the River Clyde (the basis of Farie Knowe House in Sir Walter Scott's novel "Old Mortality", and the youngest, Archibald, bought the estate of Jordanhill for the sum of £14,000 and then enlarging and altering the house to the tune of another £4,000.
