The arms are those of Montague, probably for the statesman Charles Montague, founder of the Bank of England. He was the fourth son of George Montague (a younger son of Henry, 1st Earl of Manchester), and was baptized at St. Margaret's, Westminster, on May 12, 1661. He held various high offices of state, including that of Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1694 to 1699, and was created Baron Halifax, co. York, in 1705, and Viscount Sunbury, co. Middlesex, and Earl of Halifax in 1714. He married shortly before 1688, Anne (died 1698), widow of Robert Montague, 3rd Earl of Halifax. He died in 1715 when the Earldom of Halifax and the Viscountcy of Sunbury became extinct.
