Keshishian
A rare Ziegler Sultanabad carpet
13ft 8ins. x 10ft 7ins.
description
In 1876, the Mancheser based Swiss firm of Ziegler & Co., became the first European concern to establish their
own looms in Sultanabad, Persia, for the production of carpets specifically for the Western markets.
The designs used were mainly repeated all-over patterns, though Ziegler realised that by using the principles of
architectural proportions, made the motifs much larger and incorporated wide borders, thus keeping a balance
with the scale of a room.
The bold design of this carpet with enlarged palmettes, sickle leaves and connecting stems, exemplifies a
Ziegler at its extreme, even verging towards a fantasy. An unusually drwan design of skeletal outlines, on a rare Tabac d'Havane honey-coloured field within an elelgant architectural border, again with unusual colour of
cinnamon/cognac.
The present carpet can be used in both traditional interiors as well as modern design schemes, proving that great
design is timeless. The carpet is in good condition.
