Morris & Company

An Arts & Crafts rug, Morris & Company.

Height: 3ft x Width: 4ft 1 ins.

description

The present rug was woven by Morris & Company after the move in 1881 from Kelmscott House in Hammersmith (rugs are with the hammer mark) to the larger workshop of Merton Abbey, in Wimbeldon. This move made it possible for Morris to make large carpets, often as company retail commissions. The present rug would have been available to purchase as a regular stock item, from the Morris & Company retail outlets in Oxford Street and Hanover Square, London.

The small squarish rugs had a dual purpose functionality, either as scatter/heath rugs or as wall hangings. The present rug seems to have been used as a wall hanging as the condtion is excellent with the orginal woven fringes fully intact.
